Nigeria’s Presidency dismissed reports that
Goodluck Jonathan’s administration was
plotting to remove the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman,
Professor
Attahiru Jega.
After the elections postponement announced on
February 7, Saturday, reports started
circulating in the media that Jonathan was not
any longer comfortable with Jega and wanted to
sack him before the rescheduled polls.
The INEC however denied the rumours adding
that the information that a new chair was
nominated was “false”.
Vanguard reports with reference to a source
from the office of the National Security Adviser
(NSA) that the reports were mischievous
propaganda allegedly orchestrated by the All
Progressives Congress (APC).
The official, who pleaded for anonymity, cited
security concerns and warned politicians
against spreading information that might result
in violence.
“The rumoured sack of Jega is not from the
Presidency, but part of the propaganda by the
opposition to soil the good name of the President,
to discredit the government and cause trouble.”
According to the source, Jonathan’s
administration follows the provisions of
Nigeria’s Constitution “in the discharge of its
duties, including the Chairman of INEC or any
member for that matter”.
“The laws are clear about the question of leaving
or not leaving and government has nothing to do
with that. The man has a job to do and please
allow him to do the job without dragging
government into it and the man working under
the rule of law.
“This is the government that has been obeying the
rule of law and is not going to abandon its
adherence to it. Please, they should allow
Professor Jega to do his work and stop heating up
the polity.”
A lot of Nigerians expressed their strong
discontent with the idea to remove the INEC
boss describing the rumoured decision as “a
joke” and “a comedy show”
